Somehow I knew that you would be the First one to see my comment.. Sue, are you doing Okay ? Please say yes.. This entire Planet is burning up with COVID 19 and I have never seen so much Pain... This morning a 90-91year old Maggie became the very First vaccine recipient ! ! My best, forever... Lary
Whoa.... No Glitter, No Games, No Control, and Very Little Human Contact..
We stood outside and tried to tell ourselves that it all might work out.. But we really knew that it would not.. We had been through Four Years in an upside- down state, while the Leader of the Free World took over the government, and began to slice it up into tiny little pieces.. This lunatic was convinced that he was going to Dance Around the Planet as the New Hitler, and nobody seemed to be able to stop him.. Well, sorry dude.. This is America.. The United States of America.. So, you've had your fantasy, now move on.. We like things simple, clean, and intellectually stimulating.. We Don't Want You..
How the Hell do you save the World with Peace and Love, when you can't Hold onto someone who is in Distress.. Man, I hope that Everyone is holding on for life, for What Might Seem to be Far Too Long, and at this point, just Far too Many Crazy People who don't really know what they want, much less, What They Need ! That Idiot with the screwy haircut and the Painted Orange Skin, has been ruunnning around with a seriously Bad Attitude, and a whole lot of more important things that he Wanted to do.. But guess what ! ! This is the Walter Becker Media site, and this place is Golden.. If you are Awesome, Amazing, Incredible, or even if you just want to Stay Safe, and maybe just lay low and let the air flow out of your body in a controlled manner, then say Hello and check in with everyone else that loves great music, high fidelity, and maybe a slightly twisted sense of humor.. Remember that your Uncle Walter Loves You, Unconditionally.. I know that he does because, Walter Becker is my Brother and that's how we do Uncomfortable.. Might just write a song, call it Uncomfortably Numb and play unbelievable Guitar- Solos, all night long... Delia, are you all right ? This is hopefully, going to connect with all the people who live here, and we're all hoping that they are all just fine..
When this Pandemic hit, Nobody knew what to expect.. And so life has been disrupted for everyone, and we are very close to entering Year Number Two of this adventure.. Can we do it ? Yeah, I think so.. Pretty sure that we can.. But not everybody will be able to make it, all the way through.. We're probably going to loose a few folks during this year.. It's especially sad for me, cause I'll probably be one of the lost souls.. To be honest, Walter and I were so similar in our life's journeys, and over the years, that never changed.. Although Walter is now gone, his Spirit Remains.. Great Music to live with, under Any circumstances.. But my life was spent as an Artist, an abstract painter.. My years in the studio came before Steely Dan.. I was taking a break when they first began.. But at that time, we were into Everything Exciting, and we had more Creative Outlets than we could use.. Our paths crossed in April '74, when SD came to Akron ahead of their concert in Cleveland.. Akron was really the place where the deals were done, the Press Releases were written, and the Tours were Planned.. When they walked into the room, the day before the concert, there wasn't a single suit and tie in the room.. The room was the Booking Room for all concerts, and the primary vocal booth for all of us who happened to be recording some guitar tracks for the new Joe Walsh record.. Joe started his career with us, and was now enjoying widespread popularity.. So we had a great track going, and in walks Steely Dan.. They seemed startled for a moment, but when "Skunk" Baxter picked up a guitar, the room just Lit Up, and we had to play together for an hour or so, before we really spoke.. Out of everyone in the band, Walter and I were in our own little world, playing off of one another like twins, joined at the hip.. It was Good, it was Righteous.. It was Powerful !
In Cleveland the next night, I was standing at the side of the stage throughout the show.. These guys were Really great, and the show was Amazing.. When it was over the boys in the band were eager to walk the streets of the Big City, and strut their stuff.. Back at the Allen Theater Donald and Walter were cleaning up for the night.. I packed them into my Chevy wagon, and brought them back to Akron, where we proceeded to get wasted, and intellectually connected.. Donald, Walter and Lary, what a trip.. We had stopped at Lou and Hy's Deli on the way in, so we were ready for Blast Off.. During the night, and the next day, Donald was being picked on by Walter, and me, we were much more connected than he was.. Donald was always on a Slightly different page.. He was into the show-biz attitude and we just weren't interested in that.. But, no matter, somebody has to do that ! Just not either of us..
Steely Dan took off, along with other friends of mine.. It was a Magic time in the music world.. Such an amazing time.. Walter and I kept in touch with our 4:00am phone calls and that really never stopped.. He was happier when he was in touch with his close friends, and that is something that you hear echoed in the conversations of others.. It was after he began producing for other people that his fascination with the best gear began to take a center stage.. When you are a Producer people come in to record with the instruments that they own, and in most cases that's not the best way to make a Great Record.. The producer owns the instruments needed to make that happen.. And so Walter began to fill Hyperbolic Sound Studios with the best workhorses in the music industry.. All of the most accepted instruments were soon a part of the Walter Becker Sound, and by now, it was really great.. And his quest for quality sound never went away, he had a great ear for fidelity.. He never lost his fascination with quality gear, but that's where it started.. He hadn"t really picked up much equipment in his early years, it wasn't necessary.. But now he had a Brand to Build, and that's what he did.. Over and over again...
Walter Becker was one of the greatest people that I have ever met, and he felt the same way about me.. You can never forget that kind of relationship, a genuine Brother.. During this Pandemic it's becoming more apparent that I'm probably not going to be among the survivors.. Far too many issues.. I'm not done, but I'm running out of options.. But I think that Great Art lives on, somehow.. Please Remember the Love.. Lary
Yeah, it's a vastly altered worldscape from when we last spoke and hopefully there have not been any casualties.. While the Planet has been in lockdown, and many folks are going crazy from utter boredom and cabin fever, there is a contingency of dedicated souls who are desperately working to keep everyone alive and functioning.. The lack of a strong Central Focus is an obvious handicap, but hey, this is Not a country full of sissies.. There will be some changes, some disappointments, and a lot of Pain, but no matter how many twists and turns are yet to come, Everyone has their contribution to make, and it has become increasingly apparent that those who we rely upon the most are those who are compensated the least.. Peace and Love, and a Whole lot of Patience, are probably the most important tools that we have, and music and creativity can bring happiness and enrichment to the lives of those who are in the deepest despair.. There are so many people who have found themselves without any income, and as a result, without any health insurance.. And those who are working, for the most part, also are without coverage.. This is only one example of the difficult problems that we are going to have to address.. There are far too many questions that impact the lives of everyone, everywhere, and the answers are difficult, and confusing.. But there is always an answer, and there are always solutions ! Walter Becker was my Brother and this is His Community ! A Strong Community based on Unity and Love Always Wins... Lary
That’s quite a haul and I hope you’re enjoying all (?). But what drew my eye was the road case of all things. I’m pretty jealous — it was hard not to hold back that road case out of the auction to keep for myself (damn. In fact — what would it take for me to shake that baby loose from you? 🤑
In the end I didn’t keep any road cases for myself, even though I love them all. My favorite may be the red and yellow one. .But this one of yours is one where the body lifts off the rolling “tray”, and the component sits on the tray, right? Then the tray can be rolled to a stage or wing position, and plugged in, without needing to be lifted at all. Nice :-) .
The stenciled WB-22 is obvious—all or most cases that go on tour have an inventory ID like this. This one carried the “Green Satellite 2x12” . As is reflected in the auction catalog, Walter loved Satellite amps and cabs.
The “Wardrobe A” tape has sort of an interesting history. Stop me if this is common knowledge. In tours up to and including 1/2 of the Art Crimes (’96) Tour, dressing room doors were marked with name cards; band, ladies, Fagen, Becker (see illustration here in magnificent 1996 digital camera technology http://sdarchive.com/tour96pics.02.html).
Often the rooms were on some main interior corridor which, in those early touring days, may or may not have had traffic control at either end of the hall…and the visitor lanyard/pass situation was still getting tightened up too.
So there’s random people wandering around the hallways who would see those door signs and just park themselves outside their favorite Door #2…and just wait. Being among the hall wanderers myself (I was always paranoid about security in the early days, before some good procedures and structures were developed). I saw this, while many others did not (‘cause they were inside!). I know Walter did wonder why there was always somebody just outside his door to "Interact” with him as soon as he exited the room. It got so that he didn’t want to leave his dressing room anymore to join everyone at catering, etc or whatever. (parenthetically, there did come a time when he preferred to stay in his room most nights...but it wasn't because of strange hallway travelers. 'Nother story...)
What to do? Obvious: My idea was to label DF and WB’s rooms as Wardrobe A and Wardrobe B. Could have been Laundry Room, or Stinky Dirty Socks, or anything -- except maybe Show Ponies # 1 and 2.
It was promptly and seamlessly adopted, used on radio communications, printed materials describing locations, etc. for the next 21 years.
I'm sure DF isn't Wardrobe B anymore, but it would be sort of fun to know what he does use these days. Maybe, radically....his name?
top pic is the pedals in action with some of my other ones
thank you so much Walter, for your music and your lasting legacy with all your tons of freaking gear out there being used and loved.I love the speaker combo in the cab-v30 and g12h anniversary,i use a mesa boogie express5/50+ to drive it and it sounds heavenly.Anyone have any info about what the markings on the roadcase are from?
These pics sound great! I can’t see them attached though haha. Looking forward to having a look though!! Or is it just my bad? Not sure if its just my phone playing up?!
holy cow-- good for you! These pieces were used for sure ...I knew them from the home studio, where the pieces that were in use at Hyperbolic were moved to when Hyperbolic shut down. I'm especially impressed and happy you got whatever programs or banks or drivers you needed to get it all functional
and...
" I have to admit I have stared at these pieces of tape for an unhealthy amount of time." ...LOL. At some point, somebody said it wouldn't take much time to "clean up" the various makings and pieces of tape on the equipment and I said "are you Nucking FUTZ?!"
Oh man that would have been a crime to clean up al the gear! So glad you told them!
Thats amazing to know they were in Walters home studio too, I would have loved to have had the honor to take a peek into Walters home setup. I will look after the gear and give it a good home in my little home studio!
@tomdavidwelch a peek into the his studio ... these don't really show anything of worth, j-- and they're 60 shots of nothing! circa 1996-- just the piano corner and the edge of one of the workstations, but..its better than nothing. (rite?) And if I come across better shots of the room I'll add them. This was when his home studio was in the downstairs room, one of the two rooms built and finished with acoustic treatment, and air conditioned so that instruments and equipment could survive. He hadn't been in this room too long before it was decided (don't ask me) that the other finished room was better for his home studio, which had also been fitted out at construction with the special acoustic and electrical features etc required, so the move was made and he didn't have to move again.
I set my alarm to wake up because of the time difference here in Japan and managed to stay awake all night bidding trying to snag a dream guitar. I didn’t manage to in that auction so I was so happy when I heard there was to be a second online auction! I made a number of bids and was determined not to miss out on my last chance. I was at the airport flying home to London for xmas with the family when I made the bids and as the plane took off all I could think about was how the auction was going and whether I would get lucky! I was so happy when I landed in London to see that I had won two lots!! Happy is an understatement, I was beaming like a lottery winner after the 12 hour flight!
i got two Fulltone effects pedals, one is an amazing tremolo Supa Trem, the other is a Robert Trower overdrive. They sound incredible, the Supa Trem even has markings of the settings Walter used on the tape attached, I have to admit I have stared at these pieces of tape for an unhealthy amount of time.
The second lot was a Digidesign studio console that was housed in Walters Hyperbolic Sound studio, it blows my mind to have something from Walters studio, the console has EQ and Vox written on two channels so I can’t stop wondering what may have been recorded on this, if anybody out there could let me know any more about it I would be forever grateful. I have already got it up and running and downloaded the old drivers to get it working and its great. I‘m so happy with everything I got and these items will be used and cherished in equal measures!
Hope you are doing well.. I'm thinking of you and the whole crew.. There is so much insanity engulfing us lately that I just wanted to take a moment to try to spread a bit of warmth and humanity amongst the good people here.. I stop by, late at night, to see
thehousekeepingrobot's handsomely gorgeous puppy, and to listen to what I believe
is Walter's finest song... It's so amazing to me that he never finished it himself, but the
pieces were all there, spread out over different sessions, just waiting for a fresh analysis
and the capable hands of brother Matthew, sitting in for Roger Nichols, to finally bring the work to fruition.. So, anyway, I just hoped to land here for a minute and say Ello..
@Lary Dixon Hi Lary, thanks so much for the info! Those pedals sound so much better than other gear I have owned and now I know why!
I only Procol Harum's famous stuff so will start digging deeper and listen to a lot more and get into Bridge of Sighs too! I know what you mean about that overdrive though, its not overbearing like other overdrive I have used, its adds just the right amount of grit! Love it! And the Supa-Trem is insanely good too!
That Carmen Ghia amp sounds incredible too! You and Walter the first owners?! Thats cool! I had a quick look online and its definitely another one for the list of things to one day acquire!
Cleveland sounds like a cool spot man, Akron is where the Black Keys are from isn't it?? It sounds like a real musical town!
@tomdavidwelch Hello my friend, thank you for your kind words and your interest in the Akron Cleveland Artist Community here.. Yes indeed, the Black Keys are from here and, What A Small World, they lived right down the street from me, for several years, when they first started playing together.. Sitting on my front porch I could easily hear them making music together, so I grabbed my 12 String, and headed out to investigate ! They were quite young then but they were really connected, and already had some interesting ideas..
Obviously, that was many years ago, and they have moved to Nashville and Florida now..
I haven't seen either of them for quite awhile. but I still stay in touch with them, and when a new album is finished they always send me a copy, usually before anyone else hears it..
I'm really proud of the way that they are completely dedicated to keeping the legacy of Rock and Roll alive, especially in a world of pitch perfect and time grids.. All of the music today is far too over produced and played by 'Virtual Musicians'.. Real music is Not perfect, nothing matches the magic of musicians who are playing together, face to face, and captured on record, in a studio ! Dan and Pat are great guys who are pretty much at the forefront of a growing number of artists that aren't happy about the current state of the music industry, and are doing what they can to make the music world exciting and important again.. With that in mind, let's get back to the topic.. I've been wondering if you have been able to enjoy your new equipment ?
The previous info about the effects pedals was a bit of history on the development of them, which is not what you find online today.. Everything that you see on the guitar and equipment sites can be a bit confusing, but these comments and product reviews are based on the information that came out after the Fulltone product line was finally released on the mainstream marketplace around 2008.. All of this gear was developed, and went through a number of evolutions in the private market, for several years before it was finally ready for the general public.. Dr. Z followed a similar situation with the Carmen Ghia and most of his other amps, that were all originally born in the Eighties and later.. You have to remember that all of this gear came out following a huge shift in the music industry, and at a time when guitar sales were at an all-time low.. No One, in Any industry, knew what to expect, At All ! !
In the Seventies, the Beatles were over and Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, and the Eagles took over, and everything was rapidly changing.. The Beatles had been not only the Greatest Band of All Time, but the voices of the largest segment of the World's population, and, The Consciousness of the New World Order.. Simply put, they were INCREDIBLE ! !
So with the void left in the culture, the Seventies were about excess, and a taste for the extreme.. As the Eighties moved in that taste for the extreme had been given a decade to take root and expand.. With no guiding voice, the Eighties were about Bad Taste, Extreme Excess, Overdoses, Rehab, Wasted Time, and Synthesizers..
Hello, y'all, This is obviously not meant to be read yet, but for reasons I am not
at liberty to discuss I have to park it here or loose it, for the 3rd time.. This is not
what I want to do, however.... I will correct this problem ASAP.. I'm so sorry about this
I got the "partial" 3M mastering deck, not used to record The Nightfly, although I suppose it was in the same room as one that did. Now the question is .... what do I do with it?
Hey Lary.
Good to see you here,to read your words and listen to your voice.
