Special day, never forgotten. God Bless him! Brings me back to an incredible period of life, hearing back the live takes. Thank you! My notes tell me that Take 19 was the keeper (possibly your No. 1 selection)? Now I don't remember everything, but for awhile, we truly believed that the live take was the master! There were decision upgrades made often. Tempo was a big factor, and although it feels right the live version is a smidgen faster than the master. Yes, months on the sequences, with the shifting of snares and kicks, it was hard to get used to anything else. We had tried pretty much everything with a live band. He knew what he wanted and looked around first. A little more Whackipedia for you here, if you'd like: Girlfriend was the first Whack song recorded on the March 5th (my birthday) Hyperbolic Sound tracking sessions (Reel 1A). We did 4 complete takes (CT) of Girlfriend, 2 of Book of Liars and 2 of Our Lawn that day, (no keepers). Lots of rundowns and False Starts (FT), we recorded everything, and there were some long jams between songs, let me tell you even reggae! Rough mixes were made daily, sometimes with instruments muted. Girlfriend Take 19 was recorded March 12th and was marked as "Master". These sessions went to March 25, 1993, and then the sorting, transfering (pieces from a few of the early 3M demos) to the Sonys, printing new sequences, vocals, overdubbing and mixing began. Thank you for the mentions D and M! Happy Birthday Walter, aloha!!
